Is it normal for qemu-img convert to take three weeks to only reach 30% completion?

Asked by Jack Dyson

I am attempting to convert a 1TB segmented E01 file into a vdi file for emulation. However, this process was started on the 30th May 2021 and has only just reached 35% today on the 15th June 2021 so coming up to 3-weeks.

I currently have the E01 file stored on a 2TB 3.5" 7200RPM seagate barracuda HDD that is connected, via USB 3.0 cable, to an Ubuntu 18 virtual machine where the qemu-img convert command is being run from. The vdi is being save back to the HDD.

I am aware that there are many levels to this process. It is being read from the HDD into the Ubuntu Host, then from the Ubuntu Host to the Ubuntu guest where it is being converted and then wrote back through the Ubuntu Guest, to the Ubuntu Host and onto the HDD. However, my past experiences with this have never taken so long, even for the same sized E01.

Any help on diagnosing this issue would be much appreciated as my current trouble shooting has not come to any resolution.
