Qemu 1.6 in Saucy?

Asked by GizmoChicken

Qemu 1.6, which includes several patches that help with VFIO, is now available in Debian Sid.
See http://packages.debian.org/sid/qemu

At present, Qemu 1.5, but not Qemu 1.6, is available for Saucy from the Ubuntu repositories.
See http://packages.ubuntu.com/saucy/qemu

Is Qemu 1.6 expected to be included with the final release of Saucy?

Hi Andrew,

Yes, I should have mentioned that I already checked there. I updated my question with a bit more information.

Best regards,

I suggest you report a bug. If the gains are significant it will be updated.

Andrew,

I am familiar with the bug reporting process, and if I had wanted to report a bug, I would have reported a bug. Rather, I asked whether "Qemu 1.6 [is] expected to be included with the final release of Saucy?" Now, while I didn't expect to receive an ironclad definitive answer to my question here, I did hope that I might at least hear back from someone who is at least somewhat familiar with Qemu and Ubuntu's policies toward updating Quemu this late in a release cycle. You do not appear to be such a person, and so, although I do not wish to offend you, I must say that your "answer" is not of much help to me. And quite frankly, I'm a bit miffed that you marked my question as having been answered, which it clearly has not been.

Best regards,
GizmoChicken

I am quite sure that qemu 1.6 will _not_ be included in Ubuntu 13.10, but qemu 1.5 will most probably stay the version also provided in saucy.

You have to understand the life cycle of packages in the Ubuntu releases. For each Ubuntu release there is a certain moment, when the packages are taken over from Debian. The update of qemu to 1.6 was in Debian (unstable) only on September 2, and Debian Import Freeeze for Ubuntu 13.10 was already on July 25, 2013.

Only in specific cases a software package gets updated to a higher version during the release process ("freeze exception") or after publication of an Ubuntu release ("stable release update").

I am expecting that qemu 1.6 will be included in Ubuntu 14.04 if that version proves to work well on Debian.

There might also be PPAs already providing that version for Ubuntu, see e.g. https://launchpad.net/~yofel/+archive/ppa/+packages

Manfred,

Thanks much for the answer. Much appreciated! Yep, Qemu 1.6 had been out for since mid-August, but its entry into Sid was delayed for some reason. I was afraid that we were probably too late in development to get Qemu 1.6 into Saucy, but wanted to get some feedback here before considering alternatives.

I installed from source, but doing so broke virt-manager. I could probably fix it, but I'd much rather stick to deb packages. So thanks much for the ppa. I wasn't aware of that one. I'll give it a try!

Here's hoping Qemu 1.7 makes it into 14.04.

Best Regards,
GizmoChicken
