Ubuntu Natty - No GUI at start up

Asked by Ramin Berwers

Thank you for this opportunity to ask you this question.

I installed Ubuntu Natty. From the repository I installed qbittorrent. When I started qbittorrent the GUI came up.
After closing it is impossible to get it back. Also after a restart GUI does not appear anymore.
Running 'ps aux | grep torrent' shows me qbittorrent is running.

I added the following ppa:

This did not help me. Also the unstable ppa did not gave me the solution.

Thank you in advance.

My guess is that you're affected this bug in Natty Unity:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/qbittorrent/+bug/773901
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/773307

For some reason, the qBittorrent tray icon is not displayed as a default and you cannot bring the UI back once it is minimized... You can follow this tutorial to bring the icon back:
http://www.webupd8.org/2011/04/how-to-re-enable-notification-area.html

Or even better, use a stable Window manager instead of Unity. I know that's what I did when Natty came out.
