RPM files are not to be used in Ubuntu. RPM are used by distros like Mandriva, RedHat and SuSE.

You can use the search below to find a PPA with the app you want. You can search as you wish but these links may help:

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+ppas?name_filter=libpng
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+ppas?name_filter=xv

Do they help?

There is a “python-imaging” package available in Ubuntu, maybe that contains all what you need in the right format? (current version for Maverick is 1.1.7-2)

"The Python Imaging Library (PIL) adds image processing capabilities to your Python interpreter. This library supports many file formats, and provides powerful image processing and graphics capabilities."
Maybe that contains all what you need in the right format?

If you install the package python-imaging with Synaptic package manager, it should cope with dependencies automatically and care that all required libraries are installed.
