What can we do to get the latest update (2.6+) added?

I'm still new to the Ubuntu package system but I'd like to know what I can do to get the latest version of Protoc (2.6.1) added to the Apt-Cache.

What Ubuntu release are you running?

all releases from vivid onwards contain a 2.6.1 version, see https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/protobuf

If you are running trusty (14.04), then you could try an updated version from a PPA https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+ppas?name_filter=protobuf
