prometheus-node-exporter enables systemd collector by default. High cardinality its a problem.

Asked by vcarceler

I don't know if this is the right site to expose the situation.

But prometheus-node-exporter has many collectors. Developers think that some should be disabled by default (https://github.com/prometheus/node_exporter#disabled-by-default). One of them is systemd's collector.

But the defaults for the ubuntu package is to enable systemd collector. This collector is the source of a high cardinality and that is bad. You can read: https://www.robustperception.io/cardinality-is-key/

Maybe you can consider not to enable by default systemd collector on prometheus-node-exporter.

I suggest making a feature request on github.com as an issue.
https://github.com/prometheus/node_exporter/issues

The home page for prometheus/noed_exporter is github.
https://github.com/prometheus/node_exporter

Hello, Bernard.

As you can see in https://github.com/prometheus/node_exporter#collectors they don't enable by default systemd collector in node-exporter.

It's just the ubuntu's package who enable by default this collector.

Where I should ask for a change in the default config of this package?

github, their is a new build in process.
https://github.com/prometheus/node_exporter/issues
That would be called a "feature Request"
Open as a new issue that is going on.

You could make a bug report by opening a terminal: ubuntu-bug prometheus
On the title of the bug report put [Feature Request]
Apport will collect other information to add to your bug report.

Can you help with this problem?
