What happened to powernap?

Asked by Mikael Egevig

Hi,

I've got a private web/samba server that I'd like to suspend when idle and resume when certain network traffic appears.

To this end, I'm trying to use 'powernap', but I can see that there hasn't been a release for quite some years.

Is there an alternate, better way of automating suspend/resume on system/network activity?

Thank you in advance,

Mikael Egevig

I can tell you why powernap is not available any more:

It depends on python2 which is obsolete, see bug #1853001

(I cannot suggest alternatives, because I do not use such function myself.)

Thank you for your answer!

I am considering to take over the task of maintaining and extending powernap as I personally think it is a rather cool project, especially in this time of energy crisis and high prices of electricity.

If I so decide, I'll be sure to drop a note in bug #1853001 (the one you linked to).

I found this, at GitHub, which is an eight year old Python v3.x version of powernap:

    https://github.com/Quallenauge/powernap

I have realized that I cannot use powernap for my needs (I wanted to use it to wake my HTTP/HTTPS server from sleep, but this seems impossible to do unless you have a router that can send a magic packet to UDP port 7 or 9, which I don't have), so I won't be changing powernap.
