Power saving mode statistics

Asked by S

I have a Ubuntu Server 8.10 system, which is being used as a production server. To save power I would like it to sleep (or at least stop the harddrives from spinning etc) when it is not needed. I did take measures to do so using ACPI etc.

I did take those measures, but I'm not sure about the results. I did use some tools to monitor the powersaving mode realtime, but since I need to sleep, I don't know what the server is doing at nighttime when it should be idle.

My question is:
I was wondering if you know of some tools/scripts (preferable with webinterface or e-mail reporting) that can monitor the server for me and give me a report at the end of the day/week about how much time it was saving power?

Cheers!

I have been disconnected from computer and Ubuntu in general for awhile, but I think that nowadays pm-utils (coupled with hal) is the power management tool of choice on recent Ubuntu releases.
You can check this little wiki on pm-utils to see how it is working: http://en.opensuse.org/Pm-utils
One interesting bit: /var/log/pm-suspend.log file, which only logs information when entering the suspend mode. Perhaps, they are other pm-*.log files or it is possible to configure pm-utils to output a few information.
Check also the "Creating your own hook" of the above wiki, it creates a useless hook that does nothing but log a few infos.

It's not a ready-out-of-the-box solution but it definitely may be a first start. Looks like I could do what I want to (making a statistics tool) with the help of these hooks.

Thanks a lot Huygens!
