How and what to back up

Asked by allistair

I am very much a novice user of computers, and have 3 questions.

I have just bought an external hard drive and have it hooked up.

I am currently using Ubuntu 9.10 on my laptop.

I have a CD of Ubuntu 10.04 LTS

I have installed "backintime"

I want to have a go at installing 10.04 LTS but understand I should back up my system before installing.

Q 1 What should I back up and how do I do it ?

Q 2 What do I need to do, and know, to install 10.04 LTS

Q 3 Will it just overwrite my 9.10 ?

Simple step by step instructions would be appreciated if anyone can help with either of my 2 questions Thanks Allistair

Hi,

If you install Ubuntu 10.04 over 9.10 you have two choices. Either have a dual boot of 9.10 and 10.04 or write over the 9.10 installation. The latter will erase all your 9.10 settings and personal info.

Ask yourself what is important not to erase and back this up.

You can also opt to upgrade to 10.04 which retains all your 9.10 settings and info. This is done with the Update Manager under the menu Administration/Update Manager.

Regards,

Allan :)

Hi....

If you have access to an Internet connection you could just dist upgrape through the package manager and simply update ya current 9.10 to 10.04, working around you settings and applications.

If you use the 10.04 cd it will wipe everything. If you must upgrade offline, not recommended, use the alternative ubuntu cd.

Back up anything you need to keep..... If its settings and data make a copy of ya /home folder.

Thanks for the info. Looks like I should not use the CD I have. Will upgrade using the Upgrade Manager as suggested. Cheers Allistair
