black screen at Plymouth start freezes booy

Asked by Stephen Lawton

On attempting the repair to Plymouth -"How to Fix the Big and Ugly Plymouth Logo in Ubuntu 10.04" - as it prevented the rescue mode operating, the result was black screen freeze after Grub; totally preventing Ubuntu booting. How then do I repair the unresponsive system. I have a Radeon HD5000 series graphic card which appears to be the cause of the Plymouth bug -my other desktop has Nvidea graphics and repaired following the above "fix".

Have you tried the boot option:

nomodeset

From your description it sounds like you get a black screen at boot and no desktop. Is that right?

HI, yes grub loads then the desktop does not appear just a black screen. Have not tried `nomodeset` I attempted "repair" through booting the licve CD but this did not work. Sorry, am not a Linux expert. What procedure should I follow - instructions please! Thanks.

Phew, followed the instructions in the ubuntu forum and the kernel loaded. I then made the changes permanent as suggested and now ubuntu loads properly.
So... thank you very much for the assistance!
