Is this problem depending on the nvidia proprietary graphics driver for new nvidia graphics chips/cards, that some versions of the nvidia drivers will make the system run without the plymouth screen?

In that case there is not much we can do except suggesting that you try the free 'nouveau' driver, or try the newest version of Ubuntu, 16.10 (Yakkety Yak) with the newest kernel series and its corresponding graphics drivers.
