importing video from sony handycam

Asked by Thomas Copley

Hi.
I have been trying and failing to import video from my sony handycam. its a simple USB stream and should not require any special software. However so far PiTiVi video editor is not recognising the camera/video stream.
The camera uses mini DV tapes.

Any help would be much appreciated!
Regards, Thomas Copley.

See this FAQ, as your camcorder is a DV camcorder (and should then probably work with firewire, as usb on those camcorders is suboptimal and typically only used for the memory card). PiTiVi can't manage your usb camcorder for you at the moment.
FAQ #1435: “Can PiTiVi capture video from DV or DVD camcorders?”.

thanks for the help. I've just bought a firewire cable and tried to use Kino but still no joy.
in the bottom status bar it says: WARNING: raw1394 kernel module not loaded or failure to read/write dev/raw/1394!
any ideas?

Take a look at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Firewire ; there should be a section about ubuntu 10.04 and 10.10.

Can you help with this problem?
