I also can't import wmv.

I get the error, "Error(s) occurred while importing."

Do you have ubuntu-restricted-extras installed as well as the good-bad-ugly codecs installed too?

ubuntu-restricted-extras: yes
good-bad-ugly: I don't see them in Synaptic. Is that their correct name?

I have all of the following.

gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad
gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad-multiverse
gstreamer0.10-plugins-good
gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly
gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly-multiverse

I don't have the -dbg or -doc ones; I don't need them, do I?

Should be ok. I suggest you add the medibuntu repo and install the w32codecs (or w64codecs if your OS is 64bit). This should help.

w64codecs already installed! (I use 64-bit Ubuntu.)

I guess I'll have to convert the wmv to ogg before using.

Hi, wmv videos were not properly supported in gstreamer until very recently. This should now work in ubuntu 10.10 if you have the gstreamer good/bad/ugly plugins installed.

Closing this question as it was a bug in gstreamer.

Is there a way of backporting the fix into Lucid 10.04, as I have only the LTS versions of Ubuntu?

Using the GStreamer PPA (see the pitivi website on the downloads page) should work, at least for the time being.
