You cannot "use Skype" via Pidgin. That's because the Skype client and more importantly, the components which handle the communication, are closed source. But I've heared rumors, that the Skype client will soon be open source (which probably means only the GUI).

It is a really tricky solution: you need to install a Pidgin plugin downloadable from the internet (maybe it's just in Ubuntu repo, I can't remember now) and then you'll be able to activate it from Tools->Plugin in Pidgin menu. After that, you will be able to chat and talk via the skype network but, and here comes the odious part, YOU HAVE TO KEEP THE SKYPE CLIENT ON AND CONNECTED to use this tool!! That's because, as tehy said you before, Skype protocol isn't open, so at the moment there is no chance to connect to it without the original software :-(

Can you help with this problem?
