Can not Pidgin to work

I can open pidgin, enter a buddie and write a message in the i.m dialog box(?) if that is what it is called, but next to the buddie name there is a red icon. when I put the mouse curser over that red icon a message comes out and says not on server list, what does that mean? and how can I fix it so I can use the darn i/m.??

I have problem with pidgin yesterday and solved after i do reinstall pidgin. I need less than hour to fix.
sudo apt-get remove and sudo apt-get install
