No sound in pidgin, but sound in system works

Asked by Chris Taubenheim

I have a kubuntu jaunty with the latest updates but sound is not working in pidgin.
The sound for the rest of the system is working flawlessly.
I called the system settings of pidgin and at the sound settings i choosen 'Command' and entered 'aplay %s'.
I tested the sounds by clicking on the preview button and heard the correct sound.
But when i went back to the chat window to test the sounds i heard nothing. Even restarting pidgin did not succeed.
The sound mute is set to unmute.

Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.
Greetings, -chris-

OK, there is a simple fix.... go to Accessories > Terminal

Tjere type this:

alsamixer

And check if the master volume slider is low, just press up until is fully filled

Try the auto sound method in pidgin sound preferences, and see how it works now ;)

It is not a pidgin problem, it is just that ubuntu comes with alsamixer silenced by default, so aplay won't work (because it is part of alsa utils)

Confirming that changing the method from "Automatic" to "ALSA" made the sound work again.

Can you help with this problem?
