I think that's related to Micro$oft being asshole and tweaking their (proprietary) protocol at random to annoy people who use superior software (i.e. Linux).

Right now I'm using kopete (where msn is called wlm) and it works. You can also try amsn for example.

I'd install and try those first, and if they don't work either. Only if they don't work either you can start worrying about the network. I don't think the fact that you use wireless has to do with it. If it's the network, then it's presumably a firewall issue.

Does web-based, or any other email function correctly? I'm wondering if smtp and pop3 is configured correctly. imaps would be a better protocol, if available.

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Tom: fyi.: Pidgin is an instant messenger. This is not about emailing.

vishnu: Ignore Tom's comment - like everywhere in web 2.0 everyone can contribute here, so you need to be careful about judging the quality of advice.

Easy tiger! I don't think it's really appropriate to swear in this kind of family forum, please be gentle.

Try right click on a persons name and then click on "Overview" to compare karma point rating and general info but whatever the statistics say though it is always worth being cautious about advice that's offered. Personally when i ask a question i then use the answer to do a little research of my own before committing to anything.

I would be amazed if there's any scenario where email did work and im's didn't. Are the protocols really so different?

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

There are some chances that the appropriate ports (i think it connects to port 1863 at messenger.hotmail.com) for MSN are blocked (a quick google search on "MSN messenger firewall" should give you some info), but if it's not your own network, then your only chance is to bring your network admin some cookies or flowers and ask him to enable the ports (you can always cook up some reason, why you need MSN). You can also try to check the port in the config of pidgin - maybe there's some alternative port you can use.

Alternatively, is there some other host to which you have access to (via ssh)? Then you could tunnel your MSN traffic through ssh.
You can also check the thread: https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pidgin/+question/41050

As a last resort, you can always use the MSN web messenger.

You can also try to check the 'use HTTP method' box in the advanced tab of your msn account

just for the sake of it: did you try amsn? Though I think it's not a problem with pidgin itself, since I can use msn on my pidgin at the moment. do web-based messengers (msn: http://webmessenger.msn.com/ ) work?

Can you help with this problem?
