Why dont the privacy settings block spam?

I have set my privacy settings to only allow messages from known contacts,
but I still get all this spam messages. I suspect it might be a bug or an old version.

which protocol are you talking about? yahoo, msn, googletalk?

sorry, the problem is msn.
 currently when I log into msn, so many windows pop up that I have to kill the process.

You should use "Allow only the users below".
"Allow only the users on my buddy list" doesn't work with MSN. see http://pidgin.im/pipermail/support/2008-September/002173.html for more information.
