Pidgin crashing

Asked by Aeotoc

Every time I boot up pidgin on Ubuntu 8.10 the buddy list window turns gray and I can't interact with it except to minimize and close it. When I try to close it, it gives me the program not responding prompt and asks if I want to force quit or wait.

To help troubleshooting Pidgin, you can start it without automatic accounts login.

From a terminal window invoke:
pidgin -d -n

The -d command will also start Pidgin in Debug mode, given more details and providing information about registrations and other activity. The same information is available in the debug window (in the help menu) when you are able to start Pidgin.

I'd suggest logging into each account you have one by one, and perhaps deactivating plugins one by one and trying to isolate the problem. Some plugins known to cause problems in their earlier versions include Skype and Facebook. IRC-related plugins also had bugs until recently, so make sure your system is up to date and any third party plugins are the latest version.

I only had one plugin enabled and after I disabled it I haven't experienced any problems. Thank you.

Glad it helped. Would you care mentioning what plugin it was ?
