Sound notifications stop working after a bit

After loading Pidgin sounds for outgoing and incoming IMs work fine. After a few minutes I no longer get sound notifications. I've looked and made sure that the MessegeNotifcation plug-in is enabled. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Sound alerts are not active when your are idle by default, change the setting as :

Goto : Tools >> preferences >> sound(tab)

in sound options , select "always" in the drop down menu

I double checked that and that was selected. I just did some more testing and it looks like after half an hour pidgin stops making sounds.

**After doing some more checking, I can't play mp3s either. Perhaps it is a sound driver issue?
