First i suggest you to be sure your system is fully upgraded, to check:
open a Terminal from the menu Applications->Accessories->Terminal and type:

sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo apt-get -f install
sudo apt-get clean all
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get clean all
sudo apt-get autoremove

then please reinstall purging settings of Pidgin, type

sudo apt-get --reinstall --purge install pidgin

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

Hope this helps

I know this is basic but:

Are you double clicking the icon in the System tray to open it?

Are you double clicking the icon in the System tray to open it? Indeed, this was the problem, stupid of me, I'm a shame!
Later I couldn't see my contacts, I wrote my e-mail wrong. Double shame, so for the people who have the same problem, it can be a simple mistake somewhere.
Thanks to everybody who tried to help me. It's working now, very good....

I'm having the same problem with Pidgin. It worked once before, but now, I open it, it says connecting, and then it closes. I tried the solutions mentioned about, what could be doing that?
