Have you tried to use pidgim ? It works out-of-the-box, comes pre-installed (applications, internet, pidgim) and support lots of IM protocols, besides MSN.

Microsoft have only chosen to create the MSN Messenger software for Windows. They have not made a MSN for Linux.

However, there are MSN-compatible instant messenging clients such as Pidgin (previously known as Gaim) and also aMSN.

Pidgin is installed by default in Ubuntu.

It is available from Applications/Internet/Instant Messaging Pidgin.

AL: Are you putting your full .NET Passport address ("<email address hidden>") into the screenname/username box in Pidgin?
