Apparently it is a known issue which has just been resolved.
What happened was Microsoft made a change in the messenger protocol. The problem must have started around the 20th August 2007.

The full report is at http://developer.pidgin.im/ticket/2638

I am not sure what is the process to get this updated asap in Feisty. The next version of Ubuntu (October) will most likely have this resolved.

You need to get pidgin 2.2.0 or newer so that it works.

If the new package does not come from Ubuntu, you may get it from http://www.getdeb.net/release.php?id=1307 (as soon as 2.2.0 or newer arrives).
