How to display full messages in the popups?

If I remember correctly, some time ago pidgin-libnotify displayed full messages in the popup balloons, and only later started to truncate the long ones with ellipses. How can I revert this in my install (I can edit the source package and rebuild it, I’d just like to know where to start looking)?
