It would be great to have the php-gearman extension out of the box in 16.04.2

There is an Ubuntu php-german (and php5-gearman) package https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/php-gearman only for Trusty, Vivid, Yakkety and Zesty.
A version for Xenial exists in PPA

I agree with actionparsnip's suggestion to create a bug report to request the backport to xenial.
