@r5n Name those PECL extensions. General statements are not useful to anybody.
As a counter "general statement" - no, adopting PHP 7 will not take years, it's already happening and it's not such huge deal as PHP 4 to PHP 5 transition. Most if not all of the PHP 5.6 compatible code run just fine with PHP 7.
And as is was already stated here. If you require PHP 5.x, you can just stay with Ubuntu 14.04 LTS Trusty.
