need 4.6.3 in kubuntu 12.04 in order to solve a phonon related bug

Asked by Wim De Winter

Hello,

I'm experiencing problems with playing DVD's in kubuntu 12.04 using the Dragon Player media player. I posted a bug report with the KDE bugtracking system (https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=314560) They suggest installing version 4.6.3 of phonon-backend-gstreamer in stead of the currently installed version 4.6.2. But 4.6.2 is the most recent version available in the kubuntu 12.04 repositories. How can I upgrade without causing further damage, or are there other ways to solve my problem?

Thanks!

That's strange? The latest upload is 4:4.7.0really4.6.3-0ubuntu1 . Anyway, I added the first ppa, updated the packages list and it didn't show up for upgrade in the Muon package manager. Still shows 4.6.2 as latest available. Had no luck finding anything useful in your second link.

Thanks for your time and your swift reply

You might try installing the phonon-backend-gstreamer version for raring 4:4.7.0really4.6.3-0ubuntu1 on your precise system. This can work well (but might also fail miserably, breaking a lot of dependencies).

A quick (and most probably incomplete) check shows no dependencies where I would expect problems, so it seems feasible.

If you are adventurous enough you can try the following:

1. make sure your system is fully updated
2. manually download the phonon-backend-gstreamer package for raring
3. Check with gdebi-gtk whether all dependencies are satisfyable - you may have to download some other packages for raring as well
4. (for backup purposes:) download the current phonon-backend-gstreamer package for precise and the precise version of any other packages that you see in step 3
5. install the raring package with dpkg (and the additional packages if necessary)
6. check with dpkg --audit if the dependencies are ok (and if necessary let apt-get install missing packages)
7. if the package system is clean and if the package does what you want it is fine - if not you better revert to the old status by re-installing the precise packages.

Downloading and installing the rairing package goes smooth and without unmet dependencies

THANKS!!
