I am having troble with Ubuntu 12 , therefor I would like to upgrade to a later version.

Ubuntu 12 doesn't exist. There is Ubuntu 12.04 and 12.10

Which one are you using ?

lsb_release -a

Will tell you if you are unsure.

First know your Ubuntu version. If you can't download more. Read the following link and then you decide. I think it is better to download a new version. Ubuntu 12.04 LTS is more safe. ( Next LTS will be in April 2014 Ubuntu 14.04
