install backup software

Asked by tutoke

I selected Partimage in Synaptic and it was installed, as far as I could understand. However I cannot find or use it. Does anyone know what could have gone wrong?
By the way, that anyone could maybe also advice on how to install the backup software ARECA, which I downloaded and extracted, but do not find out how to get it installed. I am rather a novice in Ubuntu and Linux and am using 10.04 since a few days.
Many thanks.

Partimage will only work on unmounted partitions. You can use partimage in a livecd environment. You will need a mounted destination to spit the backup image to.

Thank you.
With this answer however, too much remains in the dark for me:
- I suppose that first of all I would need to have the program running and for that to happen I need to find it somewhere. Can you assist me in this?
- Do you then mean than once I have the program running, I can only backup/image un unmounted partition?
Regards.

You run it in a terminal, the app needs installing in the live environment as it is not a default app.

The partition you want to make an image of must be unmounted to make an image, this will be default in the liveCD environment but will not be possible to be done on the live system if you want to backup your OS as the partition will be mounted and in use.

Thank you once more. I however still fail to see i) where to find the executable program and ii) how to run that in what you call "liveCD" environment: how to proceed in order to get in such an environment?
I hope that you will be willing and able to assist me once more in this. If not so, you could maybe inform me about other means of obtaining an image of my entire hd?
Many thanks beforehand.
