gobuntu install parted does not run

Asked by meastwood

Have installed gobunto (gutsy) on a 386 sharing the disk with win2k and winMe - no probs

Now trying to install gobuntu (hardy) on amd64 (from 64-bit ....install CD). This system already has Fedora7 and Vista installed. Partition table below:
(parted) p
Model: ATA ExcelStor Techno (scsi)
Disk /dev/sda: 165GB
Sector size (logical/physical): 512B/512B
Partition Table: msdos

Number Start End Size Type File system Flags
 1 1049kB 45.2GB 45.2GB primary ntfs boot
 2 45.2GB 45.5GB 296MB primary ext3 fed7 /boot
 3 45.5GB 45.8GB 313MB primary ext3 planned gobuntu /boot
 4 51.0GB 132GB 81.1GB extended
 5 51.0GB 53.0GB 2056MB logical linux-swap fed7 swap
 6 53.0GB 54.1GB 1028MB logical ext3 fed7 /
 7 54.1GB 80.4GB 26.3GB logical lvm fed7 volume group
 8 89.0GB 91.1GB 2122MB logical linux-swap planned gobuntu swap
 9 91.1GB 102GB 10.5GB logical ext3 planned gobuntu /usr
10 102GB 109GB 7337MB logical ext3 planned gobuntu /home
11 109GB 111GB 2122MB logical ext3 planned gobuntu /var
12 111GB 112GB 1077MB logical ext3 planned gobuntu /tmp
13 112GB 117GB 5239MB logical ext3 planned gobuntu /

During install parted fails to run - no errors (well, it runs, but just returns to the install menu 'partition disks' option) whether the partitions (3,8-10) are created/exist or not. Used fed7 parted to create/delete partitions.

Other linux installs that I have used provide the means to create partitions, filesytems, logical volumes and stipulate their mount points which I was sort of hoping I could do with this.

Can I get gobunto (64-bit PC (amd64) alternate installer CD) to install on the partitions planned for it? As stated earlier, even if I delete the planned partitions leaving a spare primary and plenty of space in the extended partition 'parted' on the install media still does not seem to want to play.

Please note that although gobuntu has been released, it is still very new and experimental. So errors and mistakes are to be expected.

Try putting on a dummy and test copy of ubuntu, to see if it has the same parting problem. If it doesnt it means gobuntu is it fault. If Ubuntu standard fails too, it either means something is up with your machine, or something on Ubuntu is refusing to run on your computer :S

I've quickly run the gobuntu install/live CD for i386 on the amd64 - no problems, text based install 'parted' works fine.
Am downloading ubuntu alternate CD for amd64, will let you know how that gets on.

On gobunto 64 alternate install, partitioning does not run automatically as with the i386 install, I had to select it. 'starting up partitioner' dialog runs, gets about 30% through whatever actions it is doing, closes and user is returned to the installation steps/options menu.

PS - I don't have a problem re. things not working as designed (my first experience of linux was kernel 0.99, took a week to configure the X server .. if you were lucky!! or not as thick as me!) I'll click the 'still need an answer' button - the result of the ubuntu alternate CD install will identify whether the problem is with gobuntu, the alternate CD method or the gobunto alternate CD install method.

ubuntu-7.10-alternate-amd64.iso install ran fine, no problem with 'parted'

There was one difference between using ubuntu-7.10 and gobunt (hardy) alternate amd64 install media.
The .iso for gobuntu is 726.3MB, to fit it on a single CD I used overburning (using K3b app.)

just installed ubuntu hardy (8.04) alternate CD for amd64 - iso < 700 MB, 'parted' works well enough to install.
