New to Linux and Ubuntu

Asked by mzing

I have installed the newest Ubuntu due to serious virus issues from Windows Xp. I have downloaded a few programs that archive manager won't even open so I can Install them. The first is with aTunes 1.12.0.tar.gz. I got this error from archive manager.

gzip: stdin: unexpected end of file
tar: Unexpected EOF in archive
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now

Another issue I have is with an flv downloader called Moyea, and though I downloaded the linux version its setup is an exe file. I get this error with archive manager.

7-Zip 4.58 beta Copyright (c) 1999-2008 Igor Pavlov 2008-05-05
p7zip Version 4.58 (locale=en_US.UTF-8,Utf16=on,HugeFiles=on,2 CPUs)

Error: /home/apocalypse/Desktop/youtube_flv_downloader_install.exe is not supported archive

Errors: 1

I'm also having some issues with the adobe flash player, and can't install the latest version. When I'm on a website like youtube etc... the flash videos play really slowly if they play at all and play very lets say" hiccupy". For the most part every thing else with Ubuntu is working fine. Should I use an alternative to archive manager? What would it be?

First. Linux is not Windows and Windows is not Linux. SOME Windows programs will work on Linux under Wine, Wine-Doors, PlayOnLinux, Cedega, Win4Lin etc. BUT NOT ALL!

Second. Your first choice should be to download and install programs automagically via a Package Manager. Your last choice should be to compile. See and

Moyea is a Windows program, not a Linux Program.

To get Adobe Flash Player you should install, via a Package Manager (!), ubuntu-restricted-extras
