Not every program will make an entry in the Menu.

Try opening a terminal and inputting the name to see if it starts from there.

You might have to manually edit the menu to create an item.

Aeham... well... maybe it's just because lots of apps are command line applications thus simply unix utils. For example I installed "tree" last night via "sudo apt-get install tree". The app installed successfully and I can run it, but there's not starter neither on the desktop nor within my applications menue.

I tried running "p7zip" in a terminal and it said: "compressed data not written to a terminal."

Ok,

see p7zip is a port of 7za.exe for POSIX systems like Unix (Linux, Solaris, OpenBSD, FreeBSD, Cygwin, AIX, ...) and thus should normally accept input and output via your shell (as well as some command line arguments).

The problem here is that the output did not get stright to your shell (which is probably the better way). Some programms like "dd" have a different behaviour which makes things more complex.

If you want to assemble some data to an archive (tarball) and compress it afterwards I recommend you Linux tools which are already »onboard«. There are also some GUIs for these. It's possible to create tarballs with ease then and compress 'em with several compression methods (*.tgz / *.tbz(2)).

To avoid problems with the command line regarding p7zip I recomend you http://peazip.sourceforge.net/ which provides you with a GUI for this free P7ZIP unix port. ;-)

Ok marce. Veamos, según parece has instalado p7zip correctamente.
Una forma más sencilla de instalar 7zip es a través de Añadir y quitar...
pones 7zip en buscar y te aparecerá.
Para ejecutarlo, desde la línea de comandos ingresa:
 7z
y para mejor comprensión puedes ingresar:
 man p7zip

arochester's reply helped me too - found hal-applesmc etc in terminal. A warning in synaptics that not everything is found there would be welcome!
