In the ubuntu software center page for 7zip it states

installing p7zip allows file roller to use .... etc etc

file roller = archive manager.

You should now be able, after this is installed, to extract and to compress files/folders 7z/zip/xz formats. Try right clicking a folder and clicking compress, then choose 7z or zip. Or you can try opening an already compressed archive by doulbe clicking on it.

also, typing 7z in terminal gives me the command line interface.

Hi Nathan, when I right click it only shows compress and no choices, it does compress and I can extract so do I assume that 7zip is the default on Ubuntu 11.10 as it was already installed?

Could you open a terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) and run command:
   file-roller

Hi, this is the result:
(file-roller:2321): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_style_provider_get_style_property: assertion `g_type_is_a (gtk_widget_path_get_object_type (path), pspec->owner_type)' failed

Do you get a window ? If not, there is a bug with file-roller we need to solve before looking at 7zip.
I don't understand #2. Even without 7zip, you should have choice between tar and gz format.

Hi, that message just repeats 5 times. The files are compressed show as tar.gz on the package. There are no options when I click to compress.

Hi, this is the difference to a photo that I was going to send as a zip: 6.0 MB (6,005,697 bytes) compressed 6.0 MB (5,997,290 bytes) Tar archive (gzip-compressed) (application/x-compressed-tar). Hope this helps.

If message is displayed 5 times, it's only a warning. But you a window should had open.
"tar.gz" is the default displayed value, but this means you also have "tar" option. Could you check again. "7zip" should be at start of this menu.

Launchpad doesn't manage attached files. You need to use a pastebin Web site and provide returned URL.

I have the archive manager box come up this time. I tried again to compress a photo and this time there were options and 7z was at the top plus a few others. I have tried the terminal 5 times and each time the archive manager comes up. 7zip still doesn't show using Dash but at least there are choices again. Thank you for all your help Olivier and Nathan very much appreciated.
