Why has this package not been updated since 2008?

Some of us on the #ubuntu-hardened IRC channel on Freenode are wondering why this package has not been updated since 2008? The concern is a security one and we are looking for some assurance that the code in the package is being actively maintained.

The package version is known to work. So isn't broken so isn't going to be fixed. If there are significant reasons to include the newer version (bug and security fixes etc) then it may be upgraded. You may also find a PPA with the newer version.

You could log a bug and state why the new version should be included and if it is deemed suitable and just, it will be upgraded
