ssh has stopped

Asked by jarome

I am new to Ubuntu, being a longtime SUSE/KDE user. But SLED is useless on my HP mini-note, so I bit the bullet and tried Heron, which seems more functional.

But I could not find a way of administering the firewall in the syste,/administration menu, so I downloaded guarddog, and used it. But then ssh (inwards) and everything else pretty much stopped working. Even if I supposedly disable the firewall.

I have then changed /etc/hosts.allow/deny to be the same as on my SUSE systems that work properly.

Even ssh localhost
fails. The connections are refused.

How can I recover from this?

Thanks,
Jim

I also went back to lokkit to "reset" it, with no success.

fwbuilder would not install because ssh did not work.

Purge guarddog. I think in Synaptic terminology this would be called “completely remove guarddog”.

sshd was not installed somehow.
