Opensm spams its logs 4gb in under 1 minute

Installed mellanox ConnectX-3 2port card
Booted ubuntu jammy,
k5.15.
Installed infiniband debs including opensm
2 copies of opensm autostarted with no
connection to card
Connected a cable from port 1 to port 2 for testing
Log partition filled full almost immediately
Killed opensm, disconnected cable, deleted logs
Only 1 opensm should be running of course
How do I achieve this?
