combatibility with MS-SharePoint Server

Asked by ice.polar

Hello,

What is needed for openoffice.org writer 2.0 to work with a microsoft SharePoint Server?

Mozilla Firefox is going to download the Word-Dokuments instead of passing them through to openoffice writer.

As far as I'm aware, Sharepoint isn't supported at all by OpenOffice.org. It's a very Microsoft-centric, proprietary product and as such hasn't received much attention from the open source community.

There are open-source groupware/document management solutions available, such as Hula:

http://www.hula-project.org

And there are plenty of ideas here:

http://www.opengroupware.org/

Although I couldn't find any Sharepoint client software.

My suggestion is this; file a bug in Ubuntu asking for Sharepoint support, so at least you've recorded your interest. Maybe someone will take up the task of adding support at a later date, although don't get your hopes up too much - this would likely be a lengthy project.

For the time being, there's little you can do but save files on your computer and work on them from there. For convenience, you should be able to drag files in Sharepoint onto the desktop (or any other folder) and, once downloaded, open them from there.

I have recently setup a sharepoint server at my work and OpenOffice does not work correctly. Sharepoint is looking at certain MS stuff that OpenOffice does not have and probablly will never have. Sharepoint needs Office programs and specifies MS Office 2003 and no other programs, including lower version of Office.
Sorry that probablly is not what you are looking for, but you could use a terminal server connection or remote desktop and connect to a windows box and then use the sharepoint docs.

Hello,
thanks for your replies. It is a fact, that Microsoft uses a JAVA-Script to upload mass of Documents (multiple uploads) into SharePoint-Server. I recognized that while working with the IE-Browser.
I don't understand programming-details but i believe that there must be a way to 'connect' openoffice-writer to a SharePoint-Server. Propably there is first of all would be a Plugin for FireFox...

Just wanted to update this:

I am using Kubuntu Dapper and through Konq. I can browse my sharepoint site and even upload new files as long as I authenicate correctly. I can even check out files, open them up in open office and then upload them back into sharepoint.

Does this answer your question?

Hello again,
this is just what i say. You are right on the point!

My question turns around the detail of checking out a document. At this
point a ms-word loads a document whithout downloading it, so to speak
directly from the sharepoint. If you finally save the document in
ms-word, there is no upload - the doc goes directly back to the
sharepoint. The doc never 'touches a disk' on my client.
(Please check it out with a ms-word version 11 so called 'word 2003').

You are so close to my question but the answer is still missing.

thanks anyway for your investigation.

Right click on the link to a document and select save as. You will be able to save your document where you want to.

Thanks for your answers. As you can see, Share Point isn't miles away but i don't want download and upload documents. Please have a look at a sharepoint-server with a windows-box and Word 2003, you will see that there is no need for down- and upload of documents! Thats smooth operation between the sharepoint server and ie and word.
