Compose character menu item doesn't show

I installed Ooo3.2 on an old pc with ubuntu 10.04 LTS and on a laptop with ubuntu 10.10. On both cases the Compose character menu item (Insert | Compose character) doesn't show on the word processor. I tried reinstalling the application but didn't solve the issue. I knew about the compose character because I have another pc installation in which Ooo3.2 has the compose character. Your help will be appreciated to solve this issue.

The 'Compose Character' option is an OOo extension.
