install openoffice 3.0 in ubuntu 6.10

Asked by JDL

I would like to install or upgrade openoffice to 3.0 in ubuntu 6.10. Openoffice 2.0 is currently installed in ubuntu 6.10. Another primary program that I use in ubuntu 6.10 will not install in the later versions of ubuntu so I need to keep using 6.10. Is it possible to get openoffice 3.0 installed in ubuntu 6.10 ? If so, how do I go about doing this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

You can take a look at:

http://chrisjohnston.org/2008/how-to-install-openoffice-30-on-ubuntu-810-intrepid-ibex

It is written for 8.10, but you can look into it.

I tried this. I brought up the sources list and entered the info (substituting "edgy" for "intrepid")but could not find a way to save the newly updated sources list.

FYI: You can use gksu gedit instead of sudo nano. Of course, it doesn't matter because there's no PPA for OO.o 3 in edgy and that link won't help you.

What program can't you run in newer Ubuntu versions? It would be far easier to get that program running or even run it in an edgy chroot than trying to get new software working in an extremely old/unsupported OS.

Dave,
It appears that I will just have to live with openoffice 2.0 in ubuntu 6.10 as the primary program used by me that won't work in newer versions of ubuntu was one written by someone else (not a published program) and my problems with openoffice 2.0 are minor. I just thought if it was not too much trouble I would try to upgrade to openoffice 3.0
Thank you all for your input.

You always have the option of dual booting or using a vbox to run
either a current version of Ubuntu or to run 6.10.
