Have you tried inserting a row at the top of the spreadsheet and putting the column names in it?

NO, but I downloaded (FINALLY) the OpenOffice DATABASE program, using Synaptec, which does allow column names. Then i used that; INSTEAD OF THE "COME-WITH-IT" SPREAD SHEET....SO THE problem is solved.

Good move. For most things a Base file makes a better data source than a Calc file. But there are a few situations where the Calc file wins. For instance, in a Calc file, you can put the whole of an address, in multiple lines, into a single cell. I do this for my Christmas card list. You cannot do that in a Base table.

And in my Christmas card list list I have column names as the first row (Name, Address, Last Yr, ... etc) and that does work. Perhaps you need them there at the time when you register the data source.
