Changing page numbers in document

Asked by John Bottcher

In Open Office I'm preparing a rather large document (>50 pages), with a table of contents. I want the table of contents pages to be numbered in lower case roman numerals-- i, ii, iii, etc. and the main body of text I want to start over with 1 and use arabic numerals and have these numbers shown in the table of contents. I can't find anyway to do this in Open Office. In Word Perfect if was very simple to accomplish. In MS word it requires a section break, but can be done. How do I do it in Open Office? None of the above answers address this issue. I can add page numbers-- Insert - Footer - Insert - Fields - Page numbers, but they are always the same throughout the document. If I go to where I want the page numbers to change and try to start the numbering over, the numbers start from the beginning anyway. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.

I'm not sure if it'll work but you could look at creating a master document. This will create a document that will link together many independent 'sub documents' - it means that each chapter can be a separate document, making everything more manageable, but with one index/contents page, etc. The open office help pages will explain this much better than I can - just search for 'master documents', unfortunately I can't find any reference to footers but you could try experimenting with some documents.

Thanks. That makes sense, so I tried it. I set up a Master Document
(odm extension) as you suggested by following the help instructions in
Open Office and created two subdocuments one for the TOC and the other
for the text, but I still can't get the page numbers right. It's
probably my lack of familiarity with master documents, but it seems to
be a convoluted way of doing the simple task of having the first page
of text after the TOC start with the page number 1. I'm out of
patience with OO and have decided to purchase Word Perfect, which I
used for years before I switched to Linux/Ubunto almost two years
ago.

Ah hah. I've just found this in the free software magazine:

http://www.freesoftwaremagazine.com/articles/the_lazy_user_s_guide_to_openoffice_org_writer

Have a look at the "Changing page numbering style" section at the very bottom.

Thanks, that magazine article was helpful. I hadn't occurred to me to
use styles to change page numbers, although I use it often for other
features. While, the instructions are straight-forward for new
documents, I haven't been able to retrofit them to my existing document
and change the page numbers between the TOC and text. Probably because
I've tried several different ways of doing it, the document is embedded
with so many codes that it's confused. I tried stripping them out, but
lost the table of contents. (Another feature of Word Perfect I miss,
is "reveal codes.") Anyway for now, I've given up, and for this
document the text will start at page 4 (consistent with the TOC). If I
stay with OO, I'll use styles next time form the beginning as suggested
in the article. However, still seems like a complicated way of
achieving a simple task.

Sorry to hear you're still having problems, but I'm glad the article was of some help.

I looked up the WP 'Reveal Codes' function just quickly and it looks like there is no such functionality in OO (and no plans to implement such a feature). However, there were some workarounds listed here:

Thank you, but still seems too complex for a simple task. When I have
some extra time, I'll try creating a style macrco or a template that
sets the page numbering correctly from the beginning (if I stay with
OO). I appreciate all your help.

Yes, you can mark this question answered and the issue resolved. Over the past couple of days, I created a new large document using the suggestion in the free software magazine:
http://www.freesoftwaremagazine.com/articles/the_lazy_user_s_guide_to_openoffice_org_writer
-- as I suggested to me by LucyB's. The article itself did solve the problem (indeed it was incorrect), but a response to the article posted below the article did. I am not an IT or WP person so the solution was not obvious-- I would have been nice if Open Office Help contained the answer. I emphasize with the comment that maybe what I want is a 'glorified typewriter," but maybe its just nostalgia for simpler word processing programs. I find OO much too complicated for what I need, but must admit it is superior to Microsoft Word and the current versions of Word Perfect (which I recently tried, and found out they are not the same as I remember) I'm retired, but continue to draft complex government contracts on a part-time basis from my home. So, I have little incentive to spend a lot of time learning fancy word processing programs like OO, but for those that do, it apparently is a wonderful program. But anyway, I learned how to have page numbers change in the middle of my documents where needed. Thank you all very much.
