oo writer how to create default footer including text

Asked by Bill Beardsmore

I want to set up a simple document using default right hand and default left hand pages. The odd number pages (default right hand page) will have a footer including right justified "Page <page number> of <page count>", while the even number pages (default left hand page) will have a footer including left justified "Page <page number> of <page count>". As the first page will be identical to all the other odd number pages it is easy enough to modify the 'default' page to make it as required for the default right hand page. However, when it comes to making a default left hand page (using Format-Page-Footer), I am able to include only a blank footer. How can I now add a left justified "Page <page number> of <page count>" to the footer in the default left hand page so that I don't have to add it each time I make a document using this arrangement ???. Any help you can give me will be appreciated, thank you in advance, bill beardsmore

Hi Bill

First you need to go to Format > Page and on the Footer tab, check Footer On and uncheck Same Content left/right.

Then you have two styles. Footer Left and Footer Right. Apply Footer Right to your first Right hand page and enter the content (using Insert > Fields > Page ... entries as required) and click the Align right icon. Do the same for the first Left hand page, applying the Footer Left style, with no need to specify Align left, of course. Subsequent pages will follow this pattern.

You apply the styles by clicking in the Footer, pressing F11 to open the style list and double clicking the appropriate style.

Hope that helps

Tony

Hi again

I have experimented with creating a template document. Create a two page document as I have already described. Use the simple expedient of entering a manual page break to get the second page.

You can then delete any text and the page break to reduce it to a single page and save this as a template document (ott). Even though it is only 1 page, it 'remembers' the arrangement of left/right footers.
