Opening OO file from Mandrake linux in ubuntu

Asked by bloomfield

I am trying to open an OO(1.0) spreadsheet from Mandrake linux in Feisty. But it gets as far as asking me the character set, and I don't know which one to pick, but it seems that everyone I pick gives me garbage.

Thanks for your question.

I am assuming that it is a file in English. In that case I would choose UTF-8. I'm not completely sure if that works because I'm not a font-guru, but I see UTF-8 everywhere on the net etc, so I assume that one fits your needs...

Oops, clicked the wrong button, it was an answer not a information request :)

Maybe it's not the character set problem. When I select UTF-8, it opens the spreadsheet as a writer document that's 584 pages long consisting of a bunch of symbols.

Hi there, did you explicitly select OpenOffice 1.0 Spreadsheet as filetype when opening the file? (There are two options, 1 is "all spreadsheets" and the other one is 1.0 only.
(Just a blind guess)
From the messages so far I get that OpenOffice 2.0 does not recognize the file type at all. You may also want to type this into a terminal:

file YOUR_FILENAME

and post the output.

Bye

When I type file epMM.sxc
I get:
epMM.sxc: data

Ok, that's what it is supposed to show. And you are sure it is a spreadsheet? You may also try to rename it to .sxw ending and open it with OpenOffice Writer.

My apologies, I have checked the file on the original system, and it appears that the file was corrupt. I tried opening another file from Mandrake OO 1.1 with OO 2.2 on Feisty and it worked fine
