Yes in my opinion, it is the best option in order to do reports, letters and documents...
there are other options like Abiword, but in my experience Openoffice is the best I have tried.

Hope this help you choose, but the best answer I can give you is to try all software you can... That's the best of the open source world, you are free...

I agree, for me OpenOffice Writer is the best. It is powerful to do the most complex tasks, yet simple to use for the simple tasks. I use it the whole time. I've had a little niggle about it in a recent posting, but that doesn't change my overall view. There's also a really excellent Help screen. It's so nice to use OpenOffice Writer after years of wrestling with MS Word, which for me now is no more than a bad memory.

Also, Open Office documents are increasingly accepted in the wider PC world. At one time, I had to save in Microsoft .doc format if I wanted to send a document to someone else, but now many people know and accept the OpenOffice .odt file. The same is true of the OpenOffice Spreadsheet. I used to convert .ods spreadsheets to MS .xls, but now I've been told not to bother, because the Open Office spreadsheet file is quite acceptable.

Hi :)

It really depends on what you mean by 'best'
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/OfficeApplications

I haven't tried KOffice (for Kubuntu) nor specialist packages such as Scribus, Semantik, Dia and many that aren't mentioned in the guide there. AbiWord might be 'best' if you are looking for something a lighter-weight yet still rich with functionality. OpenOffice can be a bit heavy sometimes but that's because it's got a lot more functionality even before starting to add plugins and things.

Perhaps using Synaptic Package Manage to search for "office" might give other options or let us know what you are looking for. Perhaps you are looking for something like Evolution with calendar and email client all built in or perhaps just an email client like Thunderbird or Claws.

Good luck and happy hunting :)
