Word splits at end of line

Asked by RJGC

In using Writer, words split at the end of the line onto the next line.  The only way to get words to stay together is to do a line return. (For example the word sides is split between two lines "side" at the end of a line and "s" at the beginning of the next line. Thanks

Is this text you have just typed in? It is not normal behaviour.

It may be that all your space are non-breaking spaces. If you go View > Field Shadings, it will show them up as little grey blocks. Is this your problem?

Hi :)

Open OpenOffice Writer (the word-processor) go up to it's top menus and click on

Format - Paragraphs - Text-flow

and make sure the top box "Hyphenation" is UNticked. The default setting is to have this unticked but most of us keep fiddling around with settings like this just to see what they do, even if we aren't aiming at configuring things to complete a particular task faster or better.

Hopefully that is fixed now?
Regards from
Tom :)

Yes, we need to know more about what is going on here and what is causing the problem, because what you are describing is not the usual behaviour of OpenOffice. If you want you can email a sample document that shows this problem to me. To find my email address, click on my name, then on Overview.

Russell

Thanks for emailing me the sample documents.

It is as I have said before. All your spaces are 'non-breaking' spaces. These are usually inserted with Insert > Formatting Mark > Non-breaking Space, or with Ctrl-Shift-Space. Do Edit > Field Shadings, or Ctrl-F8 to see them.

You will have to delete them (or at least the ones nearest the left margin) to get word wrap to work.

The question remains, how did you get them? If you get then when you hit the Space bar, then there might be some cunning entry in Tools > AutoCorrect Options.. > Replace. Or have you imported the text from some other file format with them in?

Tony

PS If this answers your question, please mark it as Solved

The first time I opened Open Office Writer, it was to read a MS Word 2007 document.  This obviously imported the text form problem.  I have not been able to locate the problem, but by opening another user name, I am able to use Open Office Writer without any of the problems I had before.   Thank you for your help and patience.

Ahah, does this mean that if you delete the OpenOffice settings for your normal user that you could solve the problem completely?

Go up to the "Places" menu on the top taskbar and click on "Home" folder. In the nautilus file-browser click on the "View" menu and tick "Show Hidden Files". Then scroll down to the folder ".openoffice.org" and rename it "old.openoffice.org". |I have a 2nd folder called ".openoffice.org2" so i would do the same to that too. Then try Writer again and see if that seems to work. If not then we could 'just' rename the folders back to what they were.

You might want to wait for Tony to confirm that but by just renaming it we can make sure that nothing goes missing. It's also the way that usually works to sort out these sorts of problems with other packages such as firefox.

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)
