That didn't work for me but i found that just

openoffice.org

Gave me a splash-screen menu of the different OpenOffice apps and i could just click on Spreadsheet from there. Are you looking for a text-based spreadsheet tho?

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

openoffice.org-calc
bash: openoffice.org-calc: command not found

But first openoffice.org worked but later it started the menu to choose manually spreadsheet (calc)

I also wonder if it is possible to use calc by commands, for examble something like this:

openoffice.org > data.ods > data.xls

Your last question looks interesting. It would be nice to be able to pass through OpenOffice like that, have it perform some function, and pass on the output to another program. I can't say I expect it to be possible as nice as it seems, not through OOorg, but may be possible to skip around the whole thing and do it ...
Still, I'm not a final authority on it, so I'm going to subscribe to this as a question and hope someone passes a method to both of us.

openoffice.org -calc file

opens the file even if it is not an excell-file. My goal is to changes it into the file.xls , but for examble

openoffice.org -calc file > file2.xls does not do it (it makes a file namede file2.xls but it's not xls -file as you can do manually by "save as"

Maybe there is an other possibility to change a file to the xls -file ?

You might want to check these out:

  * mso2ooo - Batch Convert Microsoft Office Documents to OpenOffice Documents
     http://leapon.net/en/mso2ooo-batch-convert-microsoft-office-documents-openoffice-documents

See especially the alternative version of mso2ooo provided by Adam Goodfriend which
should do pretty much what you want.

  * Moving to OpenOffice: Batch Converting Legacy Documents
     http://www.xml.com/pub/a/2006/01/11/from-microsoft-to-openoffice.html

The article is for OpenOffice 2.0 and it is about going from MS to OOo, but it
should at least point you to the right direction.

I haven't personally tried either one of those out, so I can't really vouch for them.
Caveat emptor and all that.
