Openoffice.org Calc is unable to re-show a hidden column

Asked by Cosmin L

Binary package hint: openoffice.org-calc

Calc is unable to show a column of data which was just hidden.

Test case:

1) Create a new spreadsheet
2) Select column 'B' (for example), right click it and select 'Hide' -> it will be hidden.
3) Select columns 'A' and 'C', right click and select 'Show' -> column 'B' is NOT shown anymore!

(for rows, this is working properly)

I'm using openoffice 3.0.1

Nearly every morning my email is clogged with unwanted OpenOffice bug reports.

How can I UNSUBSCRIBE to ALL OpenOffice bug reports?

THANK YOU for your help.

It seems to work fine for me. I'm not sure why it's going wrong for you. Also the mouse arrow changes shape to a double headed arrow when i get my mouse arrow on the line between A & C, double-clicking there does reveal the hidden column B too.

Have you not yet upgraded to OpenOffice 3.5.? via Synaptic Package manager's "Mark all updates", maybe that fixes it as i am on 3.5.?

@ Lloyd
I thought the answer would be here
https://answers.launchpad.net/~lwcary-deactivatedaccount/+answer-contact-for
but there's nothing there! Have you already posted this as a bug-report?

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

@ Llloyd. It really bothers me that you've reported this before and yet nothing seems to have been done about it. I would be tempted to setup a new free email account, with yahoo, gmail or someone and then change the email address that launchpad holds for you to that so you can filter at a more convenient time. Changing the email address you have registered here might throw up some problem and reveal why this is happening, such as maybe you have 2 accounts at launchpad somehow?

Good luck and regards from
Tom

There is no OpenOffice 3.5 afaik. I'm currently on 3.0.1, but I tried packages for 3.1 and the problem was still there.
And I just tried on OpenOffice 3.1 on Windows and it's the same problem. :(

I think i was confused, my OpenOffice is also 3.0.1 and i'm not having this problem at all. Annoyingly we can't send screenshots in Answers section to see if there's some odd user-glitch or whether it's something else - ahh, if only we could use the bug-squads section for a moment :(

Hmmm, i tried making a screenshot but it just wouldn't work quite right anyway. Could you go up to the "Help" menu and click on "Report a problem" and then perhaps link this question to that? The "Report a bug" sends a list of the dependencies with their version numbers - although i don't think that's an issue in this case but sometimes it can help track down a problem. By linking this question to your bug-report we could swap screenshots :) I think that would help quite a bit.

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

I've made a short clip of the problem (because a video is better than 1000 pics, no? :) ). Sorry for the poor quality, but you can see the problem IMHO.

I wonder how this is working for you, since yesterday I downloaded the latest OoO for Windows and the problem was there too...
I think I'll go upstream to look at their bugzilla.

I would like to look at that clip, but from my location, China, that website is blocked for some reason.

Can you send me the clip? You´ll find my mail address when you click on my name.

BTW, if i hide colom B and select a and c and click on show, it works perfect.

If I hide row 4 and select row 3 and 5 I have to click right between 3 and 5 and click on Show. This works perfect too.

I use Open Office 3.1.0 Build 9399.

I could see the movie but it didn't show you trying the 2 basic methods of un-hiding the column. I can see why a country would block a movie like that! lol

Also the desktop background looked like an old version of Ubuntu or is that just one of the other backgrounds for 9.04? I really like the 8.04's one. I know the version of Ubuntu is unlikely to be an issue because the same problem occurs in Windows and elsewhere.

Anyway, good luck with this, regards from
Tom :)

What is the second method of unhiding? I just selected A & C , right click and Show.

Anyway, if you guys say it's working, then it must be something wrong with my OoO installation. Thanks for the help.

Hmmm, using the "Help" menu to post a bug report would almost definitely help here. There might be some problem with some of the OoO dependencies interacting badly or something.

The 2nd method i know of is when you wave the mouse arrow around on the grey area at the top of the columns between A & C until you get the right spot and the mouse arrow changes to a very different style of arrow. At that point double-clicking the mouse should show the hidden column.

Incidentally how did you capture a screenshot style movie of your desktop? Was it a program inside ubuntu or an external camera?

Thanks and regards from
Tom :)

Double clicking when the mouse changes to an arrow works indeed, most of the times.

I used "Istambul Desktop Session Recorder" to make the clip, i believe you can find it in the repository. :)

Brilliant, thanks for that :)))
I'm glad to hear you can get it to work most of the time :)
