Hi Terry

I'm sorry but I cannot find out what you are trying to do. Which versions of Ubuntu and OOo are you using?

Can you describe more fully the options you are taking and the process you are following. I cannot find any options for 'column' headers and footers, greyed or not.

If you use the design wizard it puts in default 'page' headers and footers and puts column headings in by default.

I'm sorry then, I can't help you. The current version of that is only compatible with OOo 3.1 and the version in Jaunty is 3.0.1, so I don't want to install it. Can I suggest you look for help on the OOo forums at

http://user.services.openoffice.org/en/forum/

There is a forum there for help with extensions.

Hi Terry

I got the package from synaptic, installed it and had a play around with it. Trouble is, I can't find any way to create a table to put column headers/footers on. Where would you use them?

hello tony

i set up a sreadsheet and then opened it in data base using 'connect to to an existing db'

click on reports and select 'create report in design view'

on rhs select content 'probably as sheet1'

add field pop up appears. drag fields to detail section.

the label is put beside the field but for a column report you want it at the top of the columns so delete the labels beside the fields. maybe that is where i am going wrong.

note to delete the label you unselect the field and then click on the label. rt click and delete

if you look at the edit menu it has col heads and footers but it is greyed out.

thats as far as i got

i tried putting the labels in the page header but then on the first page they appear above the report title.

Hi Terry

I've had a play along the lines you described. I don't really think dragging fields in a line across the details section constitutes a 'table' because they are not in any way bound together. They can be moved independently. Anyway you can add 'headers' by putting text fields above them in a report or page header, albeit in a similar unbound way. I still don't know if there is a way to add a true table structure to the report. If there is, then I'm sure that the column header/footers entry would spring into life when you create a table.

I must say, I am not that impressed with this report writer. It has crashed OOo for me once and crashed X once, on both occasions loosing the edits I had done. Also I found that if you add a grouping, you cannot delete it, and the grouping didn't work for identical varchar fields (may be it does for other data types).

My final criticism, is the apparently complete lack of documentation/help. So I'm afraid I have to give up on this one,

hello tony

thanks for your efforts.

i am coming to the same opion as yourself. it keeps crashing for me and as you say there is no documentation.

it has got the thumbs down with me and i will stick with the wizard.

the only problem with the wizard as i see it , is that you cannot put a number of db fields in the same column ie one under the other.

i wanted a report which was too wide to fit on a page and wanted it to look like this

field1 field2 field3 (record 1)
           field4
           field5
field1 field2 field3 (record 2)
           field4
           field5

etc

i used to use the report generator in ms works in windows and it was able to do that.

i will have to either use windows (which i hate in principle ) or convince my wife who's report it is , that she can have the data in multiple reports.

oh well such is life, nothing is perfect.

i think that my origonal query should now be closed, if it is not already.
