Docx (Microsofts Office Open XML) isn't supported by ubuntu yet. So it's not that easy to talk openoffice into opening docx files.
You might find that howto usable: http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=2352335&postcount=3
also try this online conversion service: http://www.docx2doc.com/

With gutsy when you manually open it with OpenOffice writer, it works.
Unfortunately, it is associated with Nautilus yet. Nautilus thinks its a .zip archive

Maybe. I have opened one .docx file with OpenOffice.org without any problem. I could not save it, as when saved it was just a blank document, but I could save it as a PDF. I am using Ubuntu 7.10 and Ubuntu OpenOffice.org. Updates as of 2008-03-04.

Maybe if I had some more .docx files I can try to open others. just know I was surprised when I tried to open one .docx file and OO.O opened it.

Interesting. I tried it today with Hardy (with updates up to today; hardy is not released for a couple more weeks) and it opened fine in openoffice.org Writer.

Caveat: This was a simple one page document with minimal formatting. Your mileage may differ.

Can you help with this problem?
