Keep picture aspect ratio check box inoperational

Asked by VanillaMozilla

1. Insert a .jpeg file into a document.
2. Right click on the picture. Picture... > select Type tab.
3. Check "Keep ratio" box.
4. Resize picture.

The x:y ratio should be preserved on resizing, but it is not.

For what it's worth, AbiWord has the identical problem.

I can confirm this issue. Resizing by dragging along the corners does not keep the aspect ratio constant. However, resizing by entering a particular value in the 'Size' parameters of 'Picture' dialog box remembers to keep the aspect ratio constant.

Yes, I see. The check box applies to the dialog box but not the drag/resize handles. That's a good workaround, but it needs to apply to the handles, of course.

Is this a known bug or does it need to be reported? I didn't see anything with a brief search, but Launchpad is a bit of a black hole.

I just created a bug both in launchpad and openoffice.org

Thank you. Bug numbers? I want to follow it.

Since the identical bug occurs in AbiWord, it might apply to a common library. Come to think of it, I think I remember it from OOO for Windows also.

Hold down the Shift key as you resize a picture. This preserves the aspect ratio.

Shift Key solution by Tony Pursell works.

So, does this mean that it is not a bug?

No. it is not a bug. The purpose of the 'Keep Ratio' check box you refer to is just to control what happens when you make changes in the size boxes above it, not to control what happens when a picture is re-sized on the page. That is controlled as I explained.

See the comments recently posted against the the bug.

Just out of curiosity, where is this documented? How does one discover the secret keystroke?

In Help > Contents > Text Documents > Objects in Text Documents > Positioning Objects > Editing Text Frames > para 3.

Not easy to find, I admit, especially if you don't know the exact question to ask.

Amazing! The two hard parts were (1) Text Documents and (2) Editing Text Frames. I never would have found it. Thanks.
